I have spend the last ten years doing an engineering degree, then studying how new inventions come to pass, in addition to getting into open source hardware and software. Why? I'll tell you for why. I hope someday Dr Killer's years of creative geekery shall pay off in one single moment of comic genius.

Newswipe 2

Newswipe is fast becoming my favourite thing on iplayer of late (though Stewart Lee's Comedy vehicle also deserves a mention). Another poem by Tim Key this time gets even more intense and uneasy.

The concept of 'ohdearism' outlined by documentarist Adam Curtis below is something I profoundly agree with and formed the most sifnificant part of this week's episode.

After attending a poetry evening last week which somewhat whet my vocabulappetite, I was impressed enough with the following clip, taken from Charlie Brooker's 'Newswipe', to blog it. Key's delivery is captivating and I was (en)grossed (out).

That episode also included the best explanation of the credit crunch I have seen so far.

I once suggested the rule of thumb "If someone else is saying something in a better way than you can say it, just say what they're saying instead." Well recently I've been close to writing a song / poem / monologue about a realisation I have had, and tonight, after properly listening to the words of a very familiar song for the first time, I realised that someone else has had that exact same revelation before me.

Last Week

Its been a busy week of evenings for me at church recently.

Monday was the wealth creators course.
Tuesday Intercession & Impartation.
Wednesday was the freedom in Christ course (as part of D-group).
Thursday D-group leaders' D-group.

Friday I was free so I went for a night out down the pub with the lads. Jovial banter, some epic games of pool and then deeper conversations ensued as the alcohol had its socially lubricating effect. Tony and Paul* had only met a few times before but they both knew me really well.

Tony (from church) got dumped by his girlfriend the other day, which was all the more harsh considering his dad passed away just a couple of weeks before. He was pretty pissed off, and we really felt the full force of this. Yet it was absolutely the right context for this to happen; he was amongst people who he could connect with who cared about him. Paul (not from church) was able to counsel Tony as he lost a parent a couple of years ago. It was beautiful. We all really benefitted from the evening.

I realised that as far as the mission of our church is concerned; to connect deeply to people and see them set free; more had been accomplished on the Friday night than any of the others, yet it was entirely separate to church. Perhaps we need to reconsider our priorities?

*Considering I have not asked their permission, I have not used their real names.

I am very aware that i have a calling, though i find it hugely difficult to articulate.
I am most aware of it when i feel a powerful sense of progress towards this calling.
When i am standing still i cannot see it.
When i am doing something towards it, it becomes all the more clear.
The greatest moments of my life have always been the experience of travelling with great momentum towards this increasingly visble transcendental purpose.

Moments where this occured with power include:

Having breakthrough thoughts that influenced the direction of my PhD
Reading superb books full of intelligence and wisdom
DJing, and generally listening to amazing music
Hearing stories of people who have gone down the same road i myself am going down, only they have gone a bit further (e.g. books, films, preachers, musicians)
Expressing genuine love to another

This website captures the essence of my relationship with Jameth & Jonty more than words could ever describe. I watched this loop for literally about ten minutes before it became boring! I always knew of him, I think my mother must have met him at some point,
I’d always planned to meet him but he lived so far away.
And I was always busy what with one thing and another,
Doing as I was told, being good, making sensible decisions.
But every so often he would pop up and show me something ridiculous,
Completely out of the blue. It didn’t make any sense.
For some reason no-one else seemed to notice.
Maybe I just imagined it.
They advised me to ignore it.
"Concentrate on what’s important" they said.
The trouble is, having glimpsed him, I keep finding myself seeing him again.
He is addictive.
In fact,
I think he is the most powerful, charismatic, zealous and beautiful person I have ever met.

We’ve decided not to see each other any more.
We didn’t really see eye to eye on a lot of things.
He had a lot of rather outspoken opinions.
Too many uncompromising values.
I’ve decided to stick to what I know.
This way I can be sure I’ll be okay.
And I would advise everyone else to stay away from him too.
I now see why others had been sheltered from him.
He is far too dangerous.
It would never have worked out.

I just wish I’d never met him.

Doing what you love

Those that know me probably know that I am currently doing a PhD in 'creativity'. A few of you that know me will be aware that this mostly consists of reading interesting books, papers & blogs, and then writing down ideas. Some of you know that until 2003 I trained to be a mechanical engineer. And a further few might know that at some point I expect to have a career in music.

Its all over the place isnt it? Well I didn't plan it like this, it just turned out this way.

I've just read Paul Graham's latest essay on doing what you love. He's definitely thinking on my wavelength here, and if you are intrigued, puzzled, concerned, or even offended by my apparently unstructured life direction, then its something you really have to read.
